: : I havea download from e-music of Jon doing the vocals to Art Blakey's Moanin'-anyone know where its from? It certainly has electric piano on it so is likely to be from the early '70s
I have it on the album "Buhaina", which is fantastic anyways, but these two cuts ["moanin" and "along came betty"] with you, Jon, just make it outstanding.

: Yes. Firstly, it is not Art Blakey's "Moanin'" but was composed by his pianist at the time, Bobby Timmons. As for the one you heard, I dropped in on an Art Blakey record date at Fantasy Records in Berkley, where I had gone to take care of some other business. When Orrin Keepnews informed me that Art Blakey was recording the in the ground floor studio I, of course, dropped in to say "HI", and was immediately pressed into service by the irrestible Art Blakey to sing "Moanin'." After I had done that Orrin suggested that they might want to release it as a single and would need another side and asked me if I had anything from the Blakey Band Book that I might be able to sing also. I immediately thought of "Along Came Betty," a Benny Golson composition, which I promptly recorded with Art and the band, for which, incidentally, I never got paid (chuckle).
: I'm very glad you injoyed it and if you run across any more pertinent information about me please get back in touch.
